How Do I Get A Contractors License In Mississippi?

The first step to take for your contractor license in Mississippi is to complete the application, available online or by mail from the MS State Board of Contractors .  You must then pass two

 examinations: Business and Law and an exam in your trade.

Your contractors license will be either commercial and/or residential.

Each specialty classification will fall under a major classification category such as building construction, electrical, heavy construction, mechanical, municipal, etc.

Applications can be obtained from the Mississippi State Board of Contractors by calling 1-800-880-6161.  Examinations can be scheduled through PSI by calling 1-800-733-9267. Please select the license/examination that you are interested in.

Once you have passed the exam you will need to submit the following to the MS Licensing Board:

  • Initial Application

Do I Need A Contractors License In MS?

According to the state of Mississippi all contractors and subcontractors performing the following work need a contractors license:

  • Commercial jobs over $50,000.00 (including installation of equipment)
  • Any contract involving the construction, reconstruction, repair or maintenance of fire protection systems on public projects over $5,000.00 and private projects over $10,000.00
  • N ew residential construction over $50,000 also needs a Residential Building license
  • A contractor performing residential remodeling over $10,000 needs a Residential Remodeling license
  • A contractor performing residential roofing over $10,000 needs a Residential Roofing license
  • Residential electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work less than $10,000 does not require a state license, but you must contact the local building official or permit office regarding the local requirements

Do I Need Experience?

According to MS State Board of Contractors, the business and law exam and an exam in your trade, with no minimum experience requirements. However, they do expect you to have and document some experience in the area in which you are getting licensed.

How Much Does It Cost?

Fees are an important part of the contractor licensing process.

A General Contractor Application fee is $200, plus $50 for each classification.

The Exam fee is $120, or $50 for an exam waiver

Commercial Licensing fee : $400, and includes one classification.
Additional classifications are $100 more.

Residential Licensing fee : $50, and includes one classification. Additional classifications are $100 more.

Does A Handyman Need A License?

Per Mississippi state law, a general handyman does not need a license for residential electrical, plumbing, or HVAC remodeling job costs under $10,000.

For jobs over $10,000 you'll need a Residential Remodeling license issued and need to pass the residential trade exam, as well as the business and law exam.

Reciprocal Agreements

Although MSBOC has reciprocity agreements with various other states, it applies to testing only. Contractors must still apply for a license and fulfill all other MSBOC requirements for licensure.

If you have held a license for 3 consecutive years in one of the following reciprocating states  the TRADE exam only will be waived. *** You will still be required to take the Mississippi Business and Law exam.

  • Alabama General Board – waive everything but Mechanical & Plumbing (CAN GIVE HVAC)
  • Alabama Electrical Board
  • Alabama Heating and Air (MUST HAVE TAKEN THE ALABAMA EXAM)
  • Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board-waive all but any type of Mechanical (i.e. Plumbing, Boilers, Process Piping, HVAC) and Electrical Work
  • Georgia Board of Residential and General Contractors (MUST HAVE TAKEN THE GEORGIA EXAM)
  • Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors- waives all but Mechanical or Electrical (CAN WAIVE HVAC BUT NOT MECHANICAL OR PLUMBING.  CAN ONLY WAIVE ELECTRICAL EXAM IF TAKEN IN LOUISIANA.)
  • North Carolina Electrical Contractors Board- Electrical & Alarm Systems Only. Must have taken the NC exam.
  • North Carolina State Licensing Board for General Contractors– Building Construction, Residential Building, Concrete, Grading and Excavating, Roofing, Swimming Pools, Water Lines and Sewer – Must have taken the NC exam.
  • South Carolina Contractors Licensing Board-waive Building and Electrical only and they must have passed an exam given by either PSI, Experior, Block or NAI.
  • South Carolina Residential Builders Commission– Residential Builder – Must have taken the SC exam.
